Welcome to the Writing page. We work together to ensure that the children at Nevill Road Junior School can access a broad, balanced and creative curriculum through all subject areas. On this page you will find information about how we teach reading and writing at Nevill Road Juniors as well as information about spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Our Writing Intent: At Nevill Road Junior School we encourage children to use their imagination, be creative and have a love for writing. We value writing as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong writers. Children are encouraged to write across a wide range of genres including fiction, non-fiction and poetry as well as in all subject areas. Our writing cycle uses a variety of ‘hooks’ to engage and excite children with drama and quality texts as an integral part of this process. Children are encouraged to experience and talk about their learning, which enables them to develop their confidence in using key skills and knowledge to be creative and structure their writing. SPAG and handwriting skills are also linked to the writing cycle in order for children to understand that this is all part of the writing process.

Please see the document 'Writing at Nevill Road' to see how we teach writing across school.

Spelling ASPIRE day

On the last day before the holidays, the children enjoyed taking part in a day of spelling activities which ended in our first Nevill Road Spelling Bee. Well done to Liam. Alexander, James and Mariam who were the year group winners.

Writing and Drama ASPIRE day

This term our first ASPIRE day of the year had a writing and drama focus. At the beginning of the week the CLL team introduced the opening section of 'The Tunnel' by Anthony Browne. For the rest of the week, the children used drama techniques to become fully immersed in the text which has led to some outstanding pieces of writing across school. Many of these were shared during assembly, the vocabulary used captured all of us. The children definitely Aimed High this week and created some incredibly imaginative and successful pieces of writing.
